I have now watched and reviewed two "little" films starring well known actors--The American and Get Low. Both are set in small towns. Both feature mysterious and violent protagonists who have a special relationship with a clergyman. Both explore themes of loneliness and love lost. Both invoke God, forgiveness, and the possibility of redemption. Both feature a mysterious assault. Both build slowly to a grand finale. Both have long, deliberate, and slow sections throughout the second act. One of them held my attention, the other put me to sleep (metaphorically). If I had an hour, I would love to dissect these two movies and talk about why one worked and the other didn't. But this is, after all, only a "one minute review."
So, without further ado, the OMR of George Clooney's the American.
